St. Monica first converted her pagan husband, and then by her tears and unceasing prayers, her son St. Augustine, who is regarded as one of the greatest Doctors of the Western Church.  She died A.D. 387.

St. Pius V, of the Order of Preachers, was a Pope of great sanctity.  His pontificate was one of the most glorious.  He enforced obedience to the decrees of the Council of Trent and revised the Missal and the Breviary.  He died A.D. 1572.
Mass at 6:00pm is a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart for First Friday.  Proper on page 763. Preface of the Sacred Heart on page 882.

St. Gregory was educated at Athens in all the sciences with St. Basil the Great. He became bishop of Nazianzen and his profound knowledge earned for him the title of Doctor and Theologian, titles confirmed by the Church. He died A.D. 389.

St. Philip, like Peter and Andrew, was of Bethsaida.  He was crucified in Phrygia where he preached the Gospel, A.D. 87.

St. James the Less, was of Cana and a kinsman of Our Lord.  He wrote one of the Epistles of the New Testament.  He was thrown from the terrace of the temple A.D. 93.

Nereus and Achilleus were servants of Flavia Domitilla, who was martyred with them, A.D. 98.  St. Pancras was put to death at the age of fourteen, A.D. 304.

St. Robert was famous throughout Europe as a theologian, and as a strenuous defender of the Faith in controversy with Protestants.  He joined the Society of Jesus, and was later made Cardinal and Archbishop of Capua.  His numerous writings include works of devotion and instruction, as well as of controversy.  He died A.D. 1621, and was canonised and declared Doctor of the Church in 1931.

St. John Baptist studied theology at the Sorbonne.  Inspired by God to give a Christian education to the poor, he founded the Brothers of the Christians Schools, which soon spread throughout the world.  In private life he treated himself with extreme rigor, and died full of merits and years in A.D. 1719.

St. Peter founded a branch of the Benedictine Order: the Celestines.  Dragged forth from the solitude he loved, he was made Supreme Pontiff; he resigned the papacy in order to continue his hermit life.  He died A.D. 1296.

St. Pudentiana, like her sister the holy martyr Praxedes, consecrated her virginity to the heavenly Spouse.  She died A.D. 163.
